Improving Slow Startup Performance

Slow startup speeds are a factor of the number of programs being initialized, the speed with which these programs run and the overall performance of the computer. This article shows how to improve boot performance through these three key areas.

Microsoft’s own System Configuration utility, located under start/run/enter msconfig, contains its own startup tab that details which applications and programs are being run on your computer when starting up. You can make the PC startup faster by disabling each individual program if you wish using the check-boxes in the tab. You then simply save your changes and restart the computer to see if it has had an improvement on performance.

The one thing you have to be careful about when using MSconfig is the possibility of disabling system security applications. For this reason, it is worthwhile researching on the web what each executable file name relates to (i.e. which program) before disabling them. If you decide at a later stage that you want to roll back the changes then it is quite easy to just reopen msconfig and select the check-boxes once again.

Slow startup performance is also caused by the individual speeds of each program that is started. These can be improved by getting the latest updates for each service and application. Service programs are usually updated using the Windows update service, which you probably already have set to run on an automated basis. Any programs you have installed can also be checked for updates, patch fixes and performance tweaks on their own website.

Finally, you can make a computer startup faster by improving more general areas of the PC. In particular, try increasing disk access performance by running the disk defragmenter tool every month. You can also clear out extra space on the hard drive for virtual memory (by using Disk Cleanup or removing old applications) and increasing the maximum page file size in performance options.
