If you want to create a unique theatre experience for your living room, then a good TV and speaker set is essential. A 2.1 sound system is perfect for those who do not want speaker wires scattered around the room. Most 2.1 home theatre systems use an amplifier/DVD player, a subwoofer, and two main speakers to create the surround sound effect. New designs and cutting edge technology have allowed these speakers to sound similar to a 5.1 sound system. With this system, you will receive movie theatre quality sound that cannot be delivered by regular TV speakers.
Some 2.1 systems have decoders to make an illusion of surround sound effects with only two speakers. This method is known as VSS (Virtual Surround Sound). Although it is known by different names, all VSS systems work to create a surrounding sound effect by using one subwoofer and two front speakers. These 2.1 surround sound systems use 5.1 channel decoders and digital circuits to copy the sound of rear speakers. The VSS effect is so convincing that it can cause you to turn your head from the ‘virtual sound’ coming from behind you.
Some sound setups are prepackaged to include everything you need for your theatre except for a TV. These products may include a DVD player, subwoofer, two speakers, and a built in receiver. Bose and Samsung are two good quality brands that can be purchased at an acceptable price. High-end brands like Cambridge Audio offer the 2.1 Sonata systems with high performance speakers and components that need to be purchased separately. These setups cost a lot more, but they offer great performance if you can afford them.
A 2.1 theatre system is ideal for dorms, apartments, or other space limited rooms. They are also a good idea if you do not want the hassle of wires. 5.1 sound provides the best experience, but 2.1 will still allow you to enjoy media without extra cost or complications.
